Sergio Prego, Tetsuo Bound to Fail, 1998, DVD, 17' 30'', Edition of 10.
San Sebastian-born Sergio Prego's first show at Lehmann Maupin will feature two films and two sculptures, reflecting on conventional notions of space and time. The brand new film, Black Monday, records a small explosion and plume of smoke in the artist's studio, captured on film from a number of angles and then digitally manipulated, while his most recent previously-seen film, Solarys, references the classic 1972 Tarkovsky film, also recording on a number of cameras a journey through the tunnels and streets of Tokyo.
While these works are virtuoso technological experiments, Prego's sculptures are a little more rudimentary. Sunoise is a large sculpture comprised of two fluorescent tubes joined by mechanical arms, a witty homage to Bruce Nauman, while Prego's newest sculpture consists of large sheets of damaged metal and is described as an attempt to alter our perceptions of space. Prego has already exhibited extensively in the US, incuding shows at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Denver and P.S. 1 MOMA in New York. In Europe, he has shown at the Centro de Arte Contemporáneo de Málaga, and he also created a special installation at the Palazzo delle Papesse-Centro Arte Contemporanea in Siena in 2005.
