Graham Hudson, Challenger Tank, 2004
While other artists may speak of the 'nomadic', few take the theme quite as literally as Graham Hudson, who recently spent six months holed-up on the parade ground outside the Chelsea College of Art, London, opposite Tate Britain. Here he spent his time in a makeshift wooden housing unit-cum-studio, churning out sculptures made from local refuse and other bits and bobs, some found, some donated by other artists and students who made his acquaintance. Of his working process at the Parade Ground, Hudson stated: 'the selecting of stuff is becoming more crucial than the putting together of it, so here the studio of materials is laid bare, and over there are a few sculptures, and every state in between is on show, ever changing, in a healthy mess. The boundaries of art are for others to worry about.'
Graham Hudson's Netherlands debut will be the first show at ZINGERpresents' new space in Amsterdam. Since the artist's policy is to make the best of what's around, the precise nature of his exhibit in Holland will depend to a large extent on the content of Amsterdam's junk stores, skips and streets. Hudson's interests are broadly socialist, and his thematic concerns have ranged from the legacy of Thatcherism to the Socialist Workers Party, the Class War and the history of British imperialism and the Church of England.
