The Sarah Myerscough Gallery in London is getting into the winter spirit with a group show of work by young, emerging artists inspired by seasonal changes and, specifically, the theme of the nocturnal.
Each of these artists has interpreted this theme in a distinctive way. In Matthew Stone's photographs, which allude to Old Master paintings, contorted, helpless figures emerge from the darkness, while Alison Mills paints ethereal winter wonderlands. Eliza Meath Baker cleverly evokes a sense of the spiritual by illuminating a solitary bird against an abyss of darkness, and Andy Briggs suggests a way into a diffused infinity with his painted transparent shards of light floating over black canvases. This rich array of materials and styles draws out from the darkness the wonder of what lies within it, often buried or veiled but strongly present.
