Marta Casas Brullet, 'Croquis'

Blanca Casas Brullet (b. 1973, Mataro, Catalonia, lives and works in Paris) has made projects starting with things that could be seen as leftovers of human life, the bits hanging in the margins of daily life - constructing possible past narratives behind clothes found in the street, or exploring the future potential of wild vegetation transplanted by a human entity into a gallery space.
Further expanding on these latent, accidental forms of human storytelling, the animations and photographs in her upcoming show at Galerie Francoise Paviot explore ways in which something even more evanescent - body language - can also plot a tale encompassing time and space.
One of the highlights of the show promises to be the animation entitled 'Croquis', showing sketches of isolated actions performed by line drawings of people which are, evocatively, directly entwined with pieces of the artist's inspiration - handwritten notes that blosso into drawn realization, encompassing a view of the ordinary that captures an invisible chain of action-reactions slightly reminiscent of Erwin Wurm's temporary live sculptures.
Focusing less this time around on the incidental remains, the lower-case props that surround us, the observant pieces included in the show encourage the viewer to initiate a dialogue with sometimes familiar, sometimes off-kilter gestures (see above) that try to stand a step aside from cultural specificity, closer to a sphere where all potential body messages fit.
Casas Brullet's work has been recently getting international exposure thanks to a few individual exhibitions ('Pantalla CCCB' at the CCCB and 'Qui Aqui' at the Ca l'Arenas Centre d'Art, both shown in
Barcelona this year) as well as several group shows ('Design - Ole!', a sampler of contemporary Spanish art at the Zeroone Design Center in Seoul, and 'Les Peintres de la Vie Moderne' at the Centre Pompidou in
Paris, both in 2006). She's represented by Galeria Senda, Barcelona; look out for more projects in 2008.
