As the American artist Carter finishes various works to be shown at this year's Frieze art fair in London we asked him to give us a tour of his studio in this series of photographs and a sneak preview of the paintings and sculptures he'll be showing at the fair.
Carter is best known for his signature portraits in various shades of blue and grey which extend the genre of portraiture, and suggest a kind of mapping of the subconscious, a coded representation of identity yet to be unlocked. Carter also makes sculptural works - there will be several on view at Jack Hanley's stand at Frieze - which appear to be 3-dimensional versions of the heads in his paintings. Series of almost identical busts with artificial hair and glass eyes continue the artist's exploration of portraiture and his examination of the self.

Carter was born in 1970, and received his BFA from the Maryland Institute, College of Art and an MFA from University of California, Davis in 1997. His work was featured in the 2006 Whitney Biennial and "USA TODAY" at London's Royal Academy in October 2006.
At Frieze Carter will be showing several large paintings at his New York gallery Salon 94; sculpture with Jack Hanley from the West Coast; and also a number of smaller works at his London gallery HOTEL. In November 2007 he will have a solo exhibition at Georg Kargl in Vienna, and next spring Carter's work will be included in a group show entitled "A Fascinating Arrangement of Particles" at the Blondeau Space in Geneva. In September 2008 he will be having a solo exhibition at Jack Hanley's Los Angeles gallery.
