The World Photography Awards (WPA), sponsored by Sony, has announced a last call for entries and news that Saatchi Online will be partnering the Amateur awards with a special Saatchi Online exhibition in Cannes this April. The competition is free to enter, and all entries will be judged by a prestigious judging panel including top international photographers such as Rankin, Martin Parr, Mary Ellen Mark and Bruce Davidson. SWPA is the first awards show of its kind, providing an unprecedented international platform in the culturally important and diverse world of photography.
Entries for World Photography Awards closes on 31 January, and anticipation of the shortlist announcement grows with the revelation that the winner of the amateur competition will be awarded a substantial $5,000 cash prize. This is in addition to being named 'Sony World Photography Awards Photographer of the Year' and flown out as a VIP to attend the Awards ceremony in Cannes on 24 April 2008.
Saatchi Online will make a special selection of 100 images from the highly commended Amateur entries, to be displayed on the 'Saatchi Online Gallery Wall' in Cannes during the Awards and exhibition in April. This will be followed by the launch of the 'WPA Image Bank' on Saatchi Online which will feature up to 1,000 top commended amateur images for commercial sale.
Scott Gray, Founder of Sony World Photography Awards commented, "We are delighted to have Sony and Saatchi Online supporting the World Photography Awards. Their support further underlines the significance of the awards in raising the profile of photography on both a professional and amateur level."
The shortlist in both the Professional and Amateur categories will be announced on 15 February 2008. Saatchi Online will make its selection of 100 images to be exhibited on the Saatchi Online Gallery Wall in Cannes by 21 March. The Finalists exhibition, at the Palais des Festivals, Cannes, will take place from 21 to 24 April 2008, with the Awards ceremony on 24 April 2008.
