Late in the Biennale selection process visiting Luca Buvoli's studio in New York was 'eye and mind opening'. Other particularly memorable encounters of the same type - Malick Sidibe in Bamako, Zoran Naskovski in Belgrade, Morrinho in Rio de Janiero and Leon Ferrari in Buenos Aires.

The only show I can actually remember this year was Louise Bourgeois at Tate Modern. I wasn't expecting to be particularly interested in it, but I was completely swept away by her inventive crazy-creepy sculptures and installations - and I loved her use of colour.

It would have to be two surveys that underlined just how outstanding, inventive and crucial both artists are: Richard Prince at the Guggenheim and Robert Gober at the Schaulager in Basel. There was so much to digest in both shows to affirm how complex and ingenious both artists are, and the exhibitions left me intrigued and curious to see what comes next. A real education in both cases, however well I thought I knew the work beforehand.
