TOT TAYLOR, MICHAEL HUE-WILLIAMS AND MARTIN KEMP PICK THEIR HIGHLIGHTS OF THE YEAR

TOT TAYLOR co-founder of Riflemaker gallery in London

John Maeda's voice-controlled computers at MoMA, the sheer scale of ambition in Francesca Lowe's painting installation at Riflemaker, Kris Martin's 'emptyness' at PS1, Andrej Bartenev's disco mix in Venice, Annabelle Moreau and Aishleen Lester at St Pancras Crypt during Frieze, Gavin Turk's 'Piss' paintings at Sotheby's, London, these were all 'highs'...

A seminal show of 2007 was the Ullens Center's opening exhibition, '85 New Wave: The Birth of Chinese Contemporary Art. Useful exhibitions brave enough to cover unexpected and uncharted waters such as the Ullens Centre's will prove that radical conceptual art has been produced undercover all along and was most prominently featured at the museum in the works of Xu Bing ('A Book from the Sky') and Huang Yong Ping's 'A Concise History of Modern Painting' Washed in a Washing Machine for Two Minutes.

MARTIN KEMP

My exhibition highlight was the show by Michal Rovner at the Gallerie Haas in Berlin. Full of eloquent desperation redeemed by a timeless sense of humanity and wonderful visual subtlety. She has a show at PaceWildenstein in New York February 13th to March 15th. My exhibition low was the hang-over from the London National Gallery's Velásquez show. Of course it pulled in the punters, but its premise seemed to be: we have lots of paintings by the Spanish master, and are good friends with the Prado, so let's see what we can get. The result was sprawling, unfocused and, without Las Meninas and Las Hilandras, like hearing a double concerto without its soloists. Not a good piece of exhibition-making. My more personal low point was being introduced to Georg Baselitz in Salzburg and conversing with him thinking that he was Anselm Kiefer (no, I don't know why). He rapidly moved on to speak to somebody who did not seem to be a raving lunatic. My personal highpoint was the annual lecture of the Leonardo da Vinci Society given by my former doctoral student and now collaborator Juliana Barone. The quality of the research and lecture remind me why I am in the teaching business.
