NEW SENSATIONS EXHIBITION, THE OLD TRUMAN BREWERY, LONDON, 15-19 OCTOBER

The 2008 New Sensations exhibition opens to the public on 15 October, and will feature the work of 20 graduates shortlisted for the competition including four finalists, Mark Davey, Amy Moffat, Rob Sherwood, Camilla Wills.

New Sensations was launched in 2007 by Channel 4 and The Saatchi Gallery to find the most exciting and imaginative artistic talent in the UK. The annual competition is open to all art students graduating from BA and MA courses at UK colleges and universities in 2008. These students have entered work from their 2008 degree shows via Saatchi Online.

The judges for the 2008 competition are: artist Yinka Shonibare MBE, Maureen Paley, the founder of the London gallery, Maureen Paley, critic and broadcaster Matthew Collings, and David Roberts, collector and founder of Gallery One One One in London.

The four finalists of the competition have been given a £1000 bursary to make a new work to present at the exhibition, and each of these 'New Sensations' will have a 3 Minute Wonder Channel 4 film made about them which will be aired from 20-23 October at 7.55pm. There will be two winners of the New Sensations 2008 competition. One will be decided upon by a public web vote hosted on the New Sensations site. The second will be chosen by the panel of judges who will select a winner from the four completed new commissions made by the four finalists of the competition. The judges' winner will be awarded £3000 as prize money, and the winner chosen by the public will receive £1000.

The 4 New Sensations exhibition will take place at the Old Truman Brewery, T2 Space, 91 Brick Lane, London E1 6QL, and will be open to the public from 15-19 October, 11am-6pm. The exhibition is free.

We preview here the work which will be in the exhibition, all of which is for sale.

FOUR FINALISTS

Mark Davey, Poker, 2008

Mark Davey The Slade School of Fine Art, London
Davey makes ordinary elements of everyday life extraordinary - specifically lights, making them kiss and touch, move and swing or rub themselves over other materials. Using motors, the fragility and precarious repetition of the bulbs' movement is shown off, enticing a point of collapse, which never quite arrives.

Amy Moffat, Cages, 2008

Amy Moffat Wimbledon College of Art, London
Moffat works from early 20th century postcards, using specific colours to erase the original information contained in the cards. The documentary purpose of the postcard is turned into a sensory experience, creating a feeling of the familiar and uncanny. Her paintings become less about what they portray and more about the act of portrayal itself.

Robert Sherwood

Robert Sherwood Chelsea School of Art & Design, London
The central theme of Sherwood's paintings is the conflict between the organic forms of idealised landscapes and the artificiality of modern structures and technologies. Through different languages of paint application, he plays with perspective, leaving an awkward and disorientating view of the world.

camillawills350TRISTAR.jpg
Camilla Wills

Camilla Wills Wimbledon College of Art, London
Wills works with a process of appropriation that draws upon significant and aspirational imagery, such as movie logos, ancient boulders and rocket launchers. Objects and paintings are displayed together and used as props to produce a narrative, or narrative potential.
