VICTOR M CASSIDY ON THE MURDERS IN JUAREZ AT CHICAGO'S NATIONAL MUSEUM OF MEXICAN ART

Cuidad Juarez (pop. 1.6 million) in Mexico has the world's highest murder rate with 7 killings daily since October 2008 and roughly 2,000 murders so far this year. Since 1998, families and friends of the victims have lobbied elected officials and worked to raise public awareness of the problem. Chicago's National Museum of Mexican Art recently join...read more...

PUT DOWNS AND SUCK UPS: MATTHEW COLLINGS' WEEKLY VENTINGS ABOUT THE ART WORLD No 39: BEAUTY AND RULE...

Here's a compressed Saatchi Online article version of a film I recently finished work on, about beauty in art. The film was an hour long and was shown on BBC2 on 14 November 2009. (In the UK it can be accessed on BBC I-player.) For me there are certain laws by which beauty in art - this almost meaningless notion - can actually be defined. People a...read more...

DAVID MALJKOVIC AT SPRUETH MAGERS, BERLIN

The work of Croatian artist David Maljkovic engages with the heritage of modern utopias. His films, drawings, sculptures and installations often evolve around the potential of monuments and pavilions built during a period of optimism in former Yugoslavia in the 1960s and 1970s that have now been neglected or forgotten. Maljkovic resuscitates such f...read more...

LEANNE GOEBEL ON SUSAN ROTHENBURG AT THE MODERN ART MUSEUM, FORT WORTH, TEXAS

Michael Auping, chief curator of the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, has condensed Susan Rothenberg's 35-year career as a performer-turned-painter into a focused exhibition of 25 paintings, titled "Moving in Place." Auping has known Rothenberg for three decades and worked closely with the artist to select a small group of paintings from her diver...read more...

The National Museum of Contemporary Art in Bucharest presents the first survey exhibition of paintings by Adrian Ghenie (born 1977), the well-known Romanian artist who lives and works in Cluj and Berlin. The exhibition underscores the way in which Ghenie has been developing a consistent engagement with issues such as memory and history, by subjecti...read more...

REBECCA HORN AT THE MUSEUM OF CONTEMPORARY ART, TOKYO

The Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo is currently presenting a major representative of the German artist Rebecca Horn, the first large-scale exhibition of her work in Japan. Since her participation in the 1972 Documenta show in her 20s, she has energetically pursued a range of artistic activity that continues to tackle new territories of art - begi...read more...

JERRY SALTZ: MONEY, INSULARITY AND A HUGE CONTROVERSY FOR THE NEW MUSEUM, NEW YORK

When it was announced back in October that the New Museum would showcase billionaire mega-collector Dakis Joannou's collection of contemporary art--which includes Maurizio Cattelan, Jeff Koons, Terence Koh, and Urs Fischer--and that it would be curated by Koons (who has 40 works in the collection), the art world cringed at the insiderness of it all...read more...

PETER DAVIES AT THE APPROACH, LONDON

The tongue-in-cheek title of Peter Davies' new show - "The Epoch of Perpetual Happiness"- shares its name with one of three new paintings in the exhibition. Each work belongs to a different ongoing series and functions as a different idea or proposition of what might constitute a painting.

WILLIAM CORWIN'S TOP 10 SHOWS IN NEW YORK

The concensus seems to be that the knock-out show of the season in New York is Paul McCarthy's colourful reworking of Snow White and the Seven Dwarves (below), but also not to be missed are: Tracey Emin's solo show at Lehmann Maupin, a major survey of Kandinsky at the Guggenheim, and an exhibition of photographs by Susan Silas that trace the 225 mi...read more...

RON CROWCROFT: SAATCHI ONLINE CRITIC'S CHOICE BY BEN STREET

In an increasingly sleek and streamlined art world, it's good to feel a blast of genuine eccentricity every so often. Ron Crowcroft's hilarious and melancholy conceptualism is a tonic for the browbeaten. Maybe it's the sort of thing that might have been made anyway, before trickster pioneers like Nauman, Baldessari and Beuys drew public attention t...read more...
