Founding Director and Curator of the North Dakota Museum of Art, Ms. Reuter, among her many accomplishments, is known for developing exhibitions and collections that surround artists’ interpretations of traumatic events. She was commended for “helping a devastated community draw together and recover its spiritual existence,” during the great flood that ravished Grand Forks, North Dakota. The program awards a doctoral dissertation research fellowship for students specializing in architecture, art history, archaeology and classical studies. The fellowship supports travel for 10 months of research, including five months at the Albright, and five months at the American Center of Oriental Research in Amman, the Cyprus American Archaeological Research Institute in Nicosia, or the American School of Classical Studies at Athens. Applicants must demonstrate the necessity of being resident at the Albright and at one of the other three institutions mentioned above in order to complete their research. Organizations and institutions must be involved in youth programming for a minimum of three years, and must have paid and/or volunteer staff who will devote time and effort to implement the mini-residency program.

Discovery Research is a process by which community members are identified, interviewed, and convened for information on local events; culture and traditions; performing, visual and literary arts; crafts; and cultural organizations. The grants provide support for cultural assessment, cultural planning, local cultural inventories, and folklife field research. For example, a grant to the Town of Brunswick supported an extensive inventory of the individual artists, cultural organizations and nonprofits, and traditional culture in the region as part of a larger community planning process. Grants are awarded to Alabama nonprofit community organizations with program proposals focused on languages; literature; philosophy; history; jurisprudence; religious studies; archaeology; ethics; linguistics; folklore; history; criticism and theory of the arts; social sciences employing historical or philosophical approaches; and interdisciplinary areas such as women's studies, African American studies, and American studies. The study should concentrate on a book, film, play, or idea. Active public participation and strong humanities content are the two essential ingredients of the funded project. Mini-grant proposals should be postmarked by the first day of alternating months, beginning with January, for immediate consideration; major grant proposals should be received by deadline dates. Application forms may be obtained from the foundation. Deadline for grants over $2000 is March 1 and September 1. Deadlines for grants under $2000 is the first working day of every other month.
