Appropriation: when artists borrow known imagery and make it their own. Associated with a sly patricianism, distancing, critical intent. Lineage: Duchamp through Cindy Sherman through Richard Prince. Or so we thought we knew. But imagery is, happily, a strange place, full of the neglected unknown knowns. And so is Saatchi Online. One artist's apparently earnest newspaper clippings cumulate in odd poetry. For a painter, China's anti-vice campaign provides the occasion to re-master internet images; whether they're drawn from soft porn or the news of its eradication is now unknowable. Another leverages the orderly documentary style of interior photography - associated with anthropological ironists like Candida Hoefer - to showcase his oil paintings. These artists expand our idea of what appropriation might mean, and remind us of its capacity to blow our minds. Further, they raise the question: what does it mean to declare yourself?
