Gerhard Richter has created 80 exclusive works especially for the Serpentine Gallery and on the occasion of his exhibition at the gallery. 'Quattro Colori' comprises four coloured squares, drawn from the same palette of 25 colours used in Richter's '4900 Colours: Version II', the subject of his exhibition at the Serpentine. Like '4900 Colours: Version II', the colours for 'Quattro Colori' have been selected at random, rendering each piece unique.

Since the early 1960s, Gerhard Richter has tirelessly explored the medium of painting at a time when many were heralding its death. He has produced a remarkably varied body of work, including photography-based portrait, landscape and still-life paintings; gestural and monochrome abstractions, and colour chart grid paintings.

Since 1964, Richter has had more than 100 solo exhibitions worldwide. He represented Germany at the 36th Venice Biennale in 1972 and was the subject of a major touring retrospective, Forty Years of Painting, at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, in 2002.

The Serpentine Gallery's 450 individual donors provide income of £1.5 million, which ensures that the Serpentine Gallery is open 7 days a week and retains free admission. We offer donors priority purchase on all of the Serpentine's Editions as part of their benefit schemes. As we anticipate there will be high demand for these exceptional works by Gerhard Richter, we have reserved a third of these works for the general public.

Members of Individual Donor Schemes and exhibition Sponsors will receive privileged advanced access to buy one of these works, on a first-come-first-served basis. Given the likely unprecedented interest in this Edition, the works which have been reserved for the general public will be available for purchase only in the lobby of the Gallery, in person, on a first-come-first-served basis from 10am on Tuesday 23 September 2008.
