MILTOS MANETAS AND ANTON VIDOKLE PICK THEIR HIGHLIGHTS OF 2008

MILTOS MANETAS is a London-based artist of Greek origin. He is the founder of NEEN, the first Internet Art Movement which he introduced in 2000 at the Gagosian Gallery in New York. A book about his paintings is about to be released in February 2009 by Johan and Levi Editore. To find out more about Miltos Manetas you can visit his website: at www.manetas.com

Ethereal Self by Harm van den Dorpel

A Diamond on the Web and you can reflect yourself on it! What can be more sublime than this? Made by the Dutch artist Harm van den Dorpel, I was so impressed that I bought the work from him and it now belongs to the Manetas Collection.

Jello Time by Rafael Rozendaal

The Internet pioneer artist who brought us the classic Fataltotheflesh.com. Abstract sensational beauty - you aren't really sure why you like JelloTime and that's what makes it a great work if art.

Pop Corn Painting by Rafael Rozendaal
Pop is the essence of PopArt and Popcornpainting is the spirit of Warhol captured by Rozendaal. As shallow as it gets, this work reaches a metaphysical point when you freeze the "Pop" by simply clicking on it. Poor Warhol, he had to do all that silk-screening and he didn't even come close to what Rozendaal accomplishes with just a few lines of Flash animation code.

50 50 2008 by Oliver Laric

50 people singing 50 Cents: Laric doesn't want to put his pieces on separate domains, he considers them hitchhikers of other situations, now you find them in YouTube, later in some Art shows. Fact is that when you see his works online it feels natural because it's the Internet speaking about itself. Up to this moment, he is the best YouTube artist I know.

String Theories by Sinem Erkas

A website which is a musical instrument. Not so much to be played to produce music but great for creating an art experience. How does it work? Marinetti and the Futurists knew: there is a borderline between the visual, interactivity and sound and when you cross that line you have "beauty". This is the very first work by Sinem Erkas, a 21 year old who lives in London.

Electricity Comes From Another Planet by Angelo Plessas
Plessas makes great works when he concentrates his talents on the Internet. These works don't mean anything, and that's their strong point; they are beyond explanation and this is rare in an art world where everything comes with a manual.

666 Smielyz 2008 by Petra Cortright

Petra could be the Picasso of the Net. For the moment she is discovering her identity in front of webcams. Google her to discover more about her: Petra Cortright

Nikola Tosic On Copyright by Nikola Tosic

Nikola Tosic is a Serbian re-incarnation of the old Diogenes. The Web is his barrel and he decides to scribble its walls making existential websites. There are zillions of them and they aren't always easy to discover but that's part of the deal.

This Is Sand by Johanna Lundberg, Jenna Sutela and Timo Koro

Two designers and a programmer (Lundberg, Sutela & Koro) made this digital mandala tool which is so close to art that if they will not agree to sell it to the Manetas Collection, I will simply appropriate it and put it up there as my own artwork. "A Thing of Beauty is a Joy Forever" - that is what distinguishes design from an artwork and this website is definitely "a Thing of Beauty".

Street With A View by Kinsley and Hewlett

Google is the new Land Art Artist on the block. This time it succeeds in making the ultimate land artwork with its Street View: a "realistic" view of the planet itself. Kinsley and Hewlett take advantage of that and they are making a performance together with Google.

Vidokle-S.jpg
ANTON VIDOKLE is an artist based in New York and Berlin whose work has been exhibited in biennials and exhibitions around the world such as the Venice Biennale, Lyon Biennial, Dakar Biennale and at Tate Modern, London. As founder of e-flux, he has produced projects such as Next Documenta Should Be Curated By An Artist, Do it, Utopia Station poster project, An Image Bank for Everyday Revolutionary Life, Martha Rosler Library and e-flux video rental with Julieta Aranda. In response to the cancellation of Manifesta 6 for which he was co-curator, he set up an independent project in Berlin called Unitednationsplaza- a twelve-month exhibition-as-school involving more than a hundred artists, writers, theorists, and diverse audiences.

'Turning', essay by Irit Rogoff

In the inaugural issue of e-flux journal, Irit shares her personal observations on art academies, institutions, and exhibitions as discursive entities and their various potentials for becoming "a model for 'being in the world.'" A must read.

Jan Verwoert: Why are conceptual artists painting again? Because they think it's a good idea, lectures at the building, Berlin
Whimsically titled after a one-liner joke, the year-long series of monthly talks is an ambitious attempt at rethinking the notion of legitimacy in art. The building is an e-flux project in cooperation with Fruit & Flower Deli.

Liam Gillick: Three Perspectives and a Short Scenario at Witte de With, Rotterdam
A three-part retrospective of Gillick's work that showed between Witte de With in Rotterdam, Kunsthalle Zürich, Kunstverein München in Munich and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago was indeed, as some of the press pointed out, a glimpse into the future of art exhibitions.

Martha Rosler: Location, Location, Location at Portikus, Frankfurt
An insightful analysis of city branding, Location, Location, Location continues Martha Rosler's longstanding interest in the problems surrounding the capitalist production of space.

Paul Chan: A Play, Some Pornos, and a Presidential Campaign, lectures from Night School's seminar series at the New Museum, New York
In one of the most articulate series of artists' lectures that comes to mind, Paul Chan recounted the circumstances surrounding Waiting for Godot in New Orleans, his interest in pornography and the world of the Marquis de Sade, and the experiences of poet and 1991 presidential candidate Eileen Myles.

Rirkrit Tiravanija: Demonstration Drawings at The Drawing Center, New York
Interestingly, Rirkrit Tiravanija's drawings manage to make politics legible to the art world.
