Seems like October might be artists' books appreciation month. With three exhibitions devoted to the past, present and future of the medium, there's plenty here to keep you browsing through to the end of the year. And in case you're thinking of taking some home, have a look at this wonderful site, online home to Johan Deumens' Artists' Books, a fantastic resource.
'Off the Shelf: New Forms in Contemporary Artists' Books'
Frances Lehman Loeb Art Center
6 Oct - 17 Dec, 2006
This exhibition includes work by thirteen international artists working today who create books alongside their other output, including painting, drawing, photography, and sculpture. The artists' books included here represent a diverse range of expression, yet they share a remarkable consideration for the craft of making an art object in the form of a book, with a focus on craftsmanship and attention to detail. Many of the books incorporate layered collage or hand-drawn, hand-painted, or hand-cut pages, resulting in unique objects and very small editions. Books by the following artists will be included: Brian Belott, Jonathan Callan, Russell Crotty, Miriam Dym, Simon Evans, Francesca Gabbiani, Carlos Garaicoa, David Hammons, Beatriz Milhazes, Takashi Murakami, Paul Noble, Monique van Genderen, and Martin Wilner. Organized by the Frances Lehman Loeb Art Center, the exhibition and its brochure were conceived by curator Mary-Kay Lombino and are sponsored by the Friends of the Frances Lehman Loeb Exhibition Fund.

'Eye on Europe: Prints, Books & Multiples/1960 to Now'
Museum of Modern Art
15 Oct, 2006 - 1 Jan, 2007Taking the explosion of the screenprint in London in the early 1960s as its starting point, this major exhibition identifies significant strategies exploited by European artists to extend their aesthetic vision within the mediums of prints, books, and multiples. Seminal figures such as Richard Hamilton, Joseph Beuys, Marcel Broodthaers, and Georg Baselitz serve as anchors to sections that explore commercial techniques, serial abstraction, language, confrontational approaches, and the expressionist impulse. Concentrations of prints and books by Hanne Darboven, Mangelos, and Dieter Roth, among others, introduce work rarely shown in the United States and attempt to characterize distinctly European voices. Posters by Martin Kippenberger and Franz West reveal the exuberance of that medium, and wallpaper by Sarah Lucas, Peter Kogler, and Damien Hirst exemplify the recent fascination with this populist printed format. The contemporary section includes projects by younger artists from Eastern and Western Europe and showcases the creativity being channeled into printed art by today's generation. Comprising over three hundred works, including domestic and international loans, this exhibition is the first museum study of this innovative and lesser-known facet of contemporary art. The exhibition is accompanied by a major publication.
