Last Thursday saw the opening of the most important exhibition of international contemporary art ever staged in Moscow, taking over most of the 8,500 square metres of Dasha Zhukova's art gallery, The Garage (GCCC Moscow). 'A Certain State of the World?', curated by Caroline Bourgeois, offers the chance to see a selection of works from François Pinault's private art collection normally housed in the Palazzo Grassi in Venice. Determined not to let the recession dampen the opening party, Zhukova, girlfriend of the Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich, said: "The Moscow public needs, in a way, an introduction to contemporary art and doing a group show like this is a great stepping stone to that," she said. "The Garage will go on."

Among those who made the trip to Moscow for the opening were artists Jeff Koons and Francesco Vezzoli, both of whom have work in the exhibition. Koons's 3 metre-high chromium-plated 'Hanging Heart' is one of the highlights of the exhibition; one of five uniquely coloured versions, the magenta version sold in 2007 for $23.6 million, a record at the time for a work by a living artist. Also on show are works by Indian artist Subodh Gupta, Tim Noble and Sue Webster, Y Z Kami and Maurizio Cattelan.

Zhukova, 27, has recently been appointed as editor of the British fashion magazine, POP, which she says will have strong links with her exhibition programme at Garage and burgeoning interest in contemporary art: " What I do with Pop will have a lot to do with what I do at the Garage because I hope to introduce a large art element to the magazine, culture, a lot more literature... these things really go hand in hand."

Artists in the exhibition are: Adel Abdessemed (Algeria/France), Jennifer Allora & Guillermo Calzadilla (USA, Cuba), Francis Alÿs (Belgium, Mexico), Carlos Amorales (Mexico), Cao Fei (China), Maurizio Cattelan (Italy), Liu Dahong (China), Peter Fischli & David Weiss (Switzerland), Dan Flavin (USA), Loris Gréaud (France), Johan Grimonprez (Belgium), Subodh Gupta (India), Pierre Huyghe (France), Y.Z. Kami (Iran), Kimsooja (Korea), Jeff Koons (USA), Paul McCarthy & Mike Kelley (USA), Takashi Murakami (Japan), Shirin Neshat (Iran), Philippe Parreno (France), Paul Pfeiffer (USA), Cindy Sherman (USA), Marion Tampon Lajarriette (France), Pascale Marthine Tayou (Cameroon), Tim Noble & Sue Webster (UK), Joana Vasconcelos (Portugal), Francesco Vezzoli (Italy), Bill Viola (USA), Chen Zhen (China).

GCCC, Moscow's newest contemporary art space, opened in September 2008 with a major exhibition by Russia's leading artists, Ilya and Emilia Kabakov. GCCC is housed in one of Russia's architectural masterpieces, the former Bakhmetevsky Bus Garage, designed in 1926 by the architect Konstantin Melnikov. It is the largest exhibition venue in Moscow.

Flew in from Boston to see the show and was not disappointed. The building itself is a great work of art, and the show was vast, thoughtful, and very satisfying. This space and show is a brilliant addition to a city full of magnificent art.

Hay I thik this Indian Artist has stolen the works shown here from another Indian Art legend called N.N.Rimzon? well Gupta has a reputation of not being original always piggy backs on western art stars or unknown Indian Artist! nothing new about it!

We spent a long time finding the Garage. Building v impressive. Loved the coffee bar. Had seen the Gormley exhibition in Newcastle/Gateshead. Expected to see more art in addition to the special exhibition - given the amount of space available. Web site disappointing as it gives so little information. No map for location. No current exhibition flagged. No information on Gormley. Appears to be more about celebrity than art.
