Matthew Collings defends contemporary art at the Oxford Union in a debate which took place on 5 November 2009. The motion was: "This house believes that conceptual art just isn't art", and the other speakers challenging the motion were the Polish artist Miroslaw Balka, critic Adrian Searle, and the Tate's Stephen Deuchar. James Kalm has been a fan of Dave Hickey for years. The polemical Hickey has received a MacArthur Genius Grant, and used his ideas and prestige to establish a creative enclave at the University of Nevada at Los Vegas. Hes a provocative commentator on contemporary art, an essayist delving into deconstructivist theory, and a correspondent chronicling the American scene who melds the breadth of Mark Twain with the ultra-hipness of Hunter S. Thomson. This lecture was delivered at the School of Visual Arts September 17, 2009.

Last week an impassioned debate took place at the Saatchi Gallery as part of its Art Prize for Schools run in association with the Sunday Telegraph. On the panel were Turner Prize-winning artists Grayson Perry and Antony Gormley; philosopher Alain de Botton; design expert Stephen Bayley and Camila Batmanghelidjh, founder of the children's charity Kids Company. The debate, which you can watch in full here, was chaired by Dame Joan Bakewell and presented by Intelligence Squared. |

On Tuesday 3 February 2009 Intelligence Squared hosted a debate at The Rockefeller University in New York City to argue the motion 'The art market is less ethical than the stock market'. Speaking for the motion were dealer Richard L Feigen, Michael Hue-Williams, founder of the Albion gallery, and the collector and entrepreneur Adam Lindemann. Speaking against the motion were Amy Cappellazzo, deputy chairman at Christie's, artist Chuck Close and critic Jerry Saltz.
