WIM VAN SINDEREN ON PAOLO VENTURA AND JASPER DE BEIJER AT FOTOMUSEUM DEN HAAG
Both Paolo Ventura and Jasper de Beijer play with reality in their photographs. In his series War Souvenir and Winter Stories Ventura photographed events that he himself had never witnessed, bringing them to life with miniatures, scale models and dioramas. Jasper de Beijer goes even further, making life-size, three-dimensional models - often out of paper - which he then photographs, producing images reminiscent of Victorian prints.

DEIMANTAS NARKEVICIUS AT VAN ABBEMUSEUM, EINDHOVEN
In this exhibition, the Lithuanian artist Deimantas Narkevičius explores the links between record, memory and testimony in a selection of video and film works as well as sculpture and photography. Ranging from early pieces such as 'Europe 54° 54' - 25° 19'' (1997), shot using old Soviet film equipment, to newer works like 'Revisiting Solaris' (2007), this selection of Narkevičius' oeuvre lays bare the paradox inherent in a society's collective memory and projections of themselves in the future.

In her preoccupation with crossing different visual forms and mediums, the still life dominates the work of Iranian artist Shirana Shahbazi. Her photographs of still lifes, based partly on works by the Old Masters, can be seen in both Paris and Rotterdam until January 2009 and at the Hammer Museum in LA until April 2009.

In a frantic Faustian interaction, boundaries between real and unreal, creator and creation, public and actor, gay and straight, touch and smell, vanish. The opening performance takes place at 5pm on 29 August.

BODYPOLITICX AT WITTE DE WITH, ROTTERDAM
Why does pornography have such a bad reputation? Everybody has an opinion about porn. Most profess not to like it and many claim to have never even seen any. Yet, beyond a simple or dictionary definition, the question "what is porn?" remains almost impossible to answer. Even a Supreme Court judge was stumped, saying of pornography: "I don't know what it is, but I recognize it when I see it". Rather than offering a simple response to these questions, 'BODYPOLITICX' poses further questions: Does porn symbolize patriarchal structures and the oppression of women? Are porn films a reflection of existing socio-sexual relationships? What is taboo when everything around us is sexualized and yet sexual practices remain un-discussable? Is pornography to blame for the destruction of sexuality?

BILL ROBERTS ON SAMUEL HERBERT AT ZINGERPRESENTS, AMSTERDAM
British artist Samuel Herbert has shown extensively since graduating from Goldsmiths College in 2004, and while he has stuck fast to the style and theme of the paintings that initially brought him such attention, he is clearly a young painter to watch. For his second solo show at ZINGERpresents, Herbert picks up where his previous show at the gallery, 'Natives and Colonials', left off, presenting further precisely rendered monochrome paintings of aristocrats and their servants in unnamed British colonies during the 19th century.
