NEO-AVANT GARDE GROUP LODZ KALISKA CELEBRATES ITS 30TH ANNIVERSARY

Neo-avant-garde group Lodz Kaliska is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year. The group - artists Marek Janiak, Andrzej Kwietniewski, Adam Rzepecki, Andrzej Swietlik and Andrzej Wielogorski (Makary) - are the oldest group in the history of Polish art, and in their photography, experimental films, performances, happenings, manifestos and even operas, sarcasm, absurdity and satire have been their main forms of expression.

WARSAW GALLERY LOKAL_30 OPENS IN LONDON

In 2003 lokal_30 opened in Warsaw and rapidly established itself as one of the most important contemporary art spaces in Poland. While other galleries are closing or downsizing, this autumn lokal_30 is expanding with a new gallery in London's East End.

There's a rare chance this month in Poland to see works by top international artists Christian Marclay and Nan Goldin alongside Polish stars Wilhelm Sasnal and Miroslaw Balka in the 5th edition of the International Collection of Contemporary Art; also up this month are solo shows by Palestinian photographer Ahlam Shibli and less well-known Polish artists such as Michal Budny, Katarzyna Kozyra and Angelika Markul (below).

As part of Photomonth Kracow's varied programme of events, a new show at the Kunsthalle Bunkier will explore the work of a set of photographers from Germany, the special guest country at this year's festival, with two things in common: they all come from the state of North-Rhine-Westphalia and also share a concern for documenting transitory, passing phenomena, the sort of things that, whether minutely or monumentally, may be most indicative of a time or a place but are anything but permanent.

CONFERENCE: WHAT DUTY OF THE MUSEUM? AT THE MUSEUM OF MODERN ART WARSAW

Last year the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw invited architects from all over the world to submit proposals for a new building to house its collection and temporary exhibitions. One hundred and seventy-eight architects entered the competition, and on 26 February the winner will be announced. To mark this moment of great significance for the museum and for the cultural life of Warsaw, the museum is organising a conference in March to consider the new museum within the context of the city, and to discuss its future programme and strategies.
