DEBATE AT THE SAATCHI GALLERY: CAN ART BE TAUGHT TO THE FACEBOOK GENERATION?
Last week an impassioned debate took place at the Saatchi Gallery as part of its Art Prize for Schools run in association with the Sunday Telegraph. On the panel were Turner Prize-winning artists Grayson Perry and Antony Gormley; philosopher Alain de Botton; design expert Stephen Bayley and Camila Batmanghelidjh, founder of the children's charity Kids Company. The debate, which you can watch in full here, was chaired by Dame Joan Bakewell and presented by Intelligence Squared.

As a member of Saatchi "My Gallery" in London, England, I would say the following about teaching Art today---First, as a computer user, everyone knows about "PHOTOSHOP". With Photoshop, ANYONE, can squiggle a line and create instantaneously, 10 different "STYLES" of lines-- there any images on the computer can instantly translate to 10 completely different styles- this is now known on the computer as "DIGITAL ART" anyone instantly can become Jackson Pollack or Wassily Kandinsky or Salvador Dali1 but-- with all this TECHNICAL VIRTUOSITY, OF AMAZING REALISTIC IMAGES- that are vacuous ! sterile , no feeling- as GREAT ENGLISH ARTIST, FRANCIS BACON SAID ABOUT HIS ART-- "IT COME DIRECTLY OFF THE NERVOUS SYSTEM-- THE CHINESE REFER TO THIS INVISIBLE FORCE AS "CHI ENERGY' VAN GOGH HAS THIS FORCE IN HIS PAINTINGS , THATS WHY WE REACT TO THEM SO INTENSELY! SECONDLY, IN 2009, THE FRENCH PHILOSOPHY OF "DECONSTRUCTIONISM" HAS TAKEN OVER THE Western world, which says: "THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS " Good or Bad" everything and everyone is EQUAL... SO IN ESSENCE DECONSTRUCTISM TELLS US A GARBAGE IS EQUAL IN "TALENT" TO MICHAELANGELO AND MICHANGELO'S SISTINE CHAPEL CEILING IS THEREFORE INSIGNIFCANT! SAME AS HIS "PIETA" SCULPTURE, A PRIMITIVES ART IS EQUAL TO LEONARDO DA VINCI-- enuf said.......

Can we teach art in the age of Facebook?.....Sounds like the same question when the car replaced the horse drawn carriage....it's all about embracing change which is a constant....the only thing that is predictable is change......

Great ideas, clearly expressed without the usual pretentious and pedantic 'artspeak'. Particularly Camila's points about art stemming from our childlike need to be reflected, to matter, to belong to this world. I hope there are more debates like this in future.
