JAMES DRAKE INTERVIEW
James Drake's 1996 film 'Tongue-Cut Sparrows' features the somber pageant of women hand-signaling a sign language to their men, inside an El Paso prison, while the women stood outside. Drake showed this video at the 2007 Venice Biennale, as part of the US pavilion curated by Robert Storr. In this film, in which he's interviewed by Ellen Berkovitch, he explains that he asked them to sign poetry for the video - some picked Lorca, and the title comes from a poem by Albuquerque poet Jimmy Santiago Baca. This interview first appeared on www.adobeairstream.com where you can also read more about James Drake's work. 'Tongue-Cut Sparrow' is part of the exhibition 'Talking Pictures' at SITE Santa Fe until January 2010.
