| Artist Li Zhuangzhi uses ancient Chinese and Bhudist mythological symbols mixed with modern sybolism as metaphors to represent the facades presented by people to the outside world while their "secret" internal psyche (painted as the main composition laid bare for all to see) is completely in conflict. In many of his original oil paintings, the Golden carp shown symbolise success, wealth and good fortune - the facade presented to the outside world. The internal belief knows that while the fish can swim safely in their little world (the fish tank), they will remain lucky, safe, happy and successful. If, however, the fish dare to leave their sphere - to live outside in the air and not in the water - they will die. Li says that this series of paintings depict an internal jouney of his own emotions experienced some years ago, the culmination of which is a most beautiful spiritually uplifting painting entitled "Back Home". Li has been trained in classical art at the St. Petersburg Art Institiute. He currently resides in Beijing where he is studying for a PHD and where he lectures in Fine Art Restoration. |
