| To dig and work the earth are gestures that mark a period in history by telling its story and by restoring its memory. In the sculptural space where thoughts and things are modelled, Marie A. Côté seeks, through the object and the matter, to make sense of the void that retains what we wish.
For her, everything begins with pottery. She has never lost the sense of pleasure she gets from throwing a pot, despite the fact that, today, the artist is better known for her sculptures and installations.
Her inspiration comes from this original experience, that is, all forms are built from nothing. Like any pot requiring to be filled, her work seeks to show to us this complex experience that connects object to space. One can imagine an empty space easily, but one cannot concieve of an object without the space surrounding it. She has used several strategies to bring forth the problematic bonds that unite us in this dependent relationship, like the use of light and shadow, the tension between the materiality of objects and their intangible parts, her research on water, wind and more recently, music and video
