| Kounosuke Kawakami was born in Japan, coming to London in 1999 to study fine art. He has since completed his BA & MA at Central St. Martin’s College of Arts in 2004 and was given an exhibition at BEARSPACE soon after. Kawakami had his first solo exhibition in 2006 at BEARSPACE and has been inundated with exhibitions ever since. Kawakami now works from his studio in Shoreditch and is awaiting exhibitions with Houldsworth Gallery among others.
The artist’s fantastical paintings fuse the delicacy of the tradition of British landscape painting, with sci fi & industrial themes, creating the sublime and the technological. Kawakami has an intriguing view of the post-industrial climate and uses influences from futuristic imagery, modern disaster and landscape to make sense of the artists environment. Recently Kawakami’s paintings have been layered with industrial materials and collage from magazines, relating the debris of modern life layerd over beautifully eery landscapes.
