| Sidney Nolan is one of Australia's best known artists. His work is represented in major collections around the world. He was knighted for his services to Australian art in 1981.
Nolan called these burnished landscapes 'composite impressions' of the country he had flown over in light planes (and photographed with great excitement). The hills and sun-scorched earth are painted in oil, contrasted with the gloss of ripolin enamel for the sky. The landscape itself is not unlike the sea in its windswept immensity. Indeed Nolan's aerial perspective in this series gave the outback a sense of scale never before attempted in Australian art.
