Lübeck 1789 - 1869 Rome
A monk′s head.
Partly white heightened sketch in black chalk.
Verso marked by unknown hand: ”Friedrich Overbeck”. On brownish wove paper. Size: 22,7 x 18,4 cm. Some sections with marks from rubbing and in particular in the area of the neck some smudging. Overall slight buckling.
Provenance: Collection Prince Johann Georg, Duke of Saxony (Lugt 1162 c) with the inventory number ”S. I. No. 30047”.
The study of a monk′s head with chaplet and tonsure can be attributed to Overbeck, if one goes by the markings verso. The artist has turned all his attention on the facial expression and has treated the robes fleetingly. The depiction has been kept completely in the style of the high renaissance. One has not found a direct model for this sketch, so that one can assume a self-work in the ”sense of the old” as Overbeck called it. The sketch has been thoroughly worked over; only in the contours of the face can one find signs of careful corrections.
