Merlyn Evans paintings and prints, even at their most rigorously abstract, are never about themselves, self-consciously reflexive enquiries into the nature of perception, or the “possibilities of expression”; they have always a subject, they refer always to something beyond, something encountered in the human world. For Evans, as his titles almost invariably imply, the aesthetic was a cutting edge of his psychological and ethical concerns; the image was a form of statement.
In 1966, Merlyn Evans received the Arts Council of Great Britain Purchase Award and won a Gold Medal at the National Eisteddfod in Wales. In the same year, the Tate Gallery London started a permanent acquisition of his paintings.
