| While the center of this picture is the tall potted coxcomb, it is certainly not the focus of the work. It is really a cityscape of Shenyang, which is the largest city in northeastern China and traces its roots back over 2,000 years ago to the Warring States (or Three Kingdoms period, 476-221 B.C.). Later, it was the birthplace and original capital of the Qing Dynasty (1644), and the Shenyang Imperial Palace is second, only to the Forbidden City, in Beijing, in historical and artistic significance. Moreover, Shenyang is one of the most culturally diverse cities, in China, home to 38 of the 56 so-called ethnic minorities of China, as well as to many Japanese, Koreans, and other foreigners. In this little corner of the city, we can see a cityscape, beginning with lower older buildings and stretching to the skyscrapers, in the distant center of the city. The blue background of the buildings serves to accentuate the red and green of the flowers, and the composition, with the profile of the cityscape, in the distance tends to bring your focus in, out, and around the picture. Meng Liu actually chose this painting as the cover for a book about his paintings. The price includes shipping, dismantled and rolled.
