| From the artist:
There’s this phase when I’m plotting a re-entry to the States. Everything around me kind of fades or becomes more abstract. I’m working so hard to shift to how I’ll need to be once I get there, but I’m not physically there yet. It fixes my location, to look out the car window and watch wild camels cross the sand with the Dubai skyline for backdrop. Meanwhile I’m letting home pull, pull, pull.
My grandparents always lived in a white shotgun house; though we moved around a lot, that house was a constant. Thus a shotgun house is my symbol for home, family and sometimes my own body. I love dogwood trees but I’m almost never home at the right time to see them bloom. My parents always keep a light on for me. |
