Ballard’s flowers have taken shape in split-second brush-strokes. We do not know the intervals of time that lay between them. They are fluttered by the sea-breeze like Buddhist prayer windmills. Is this a still life? The painting shimmers on the edge of being, as if the flowers were about to leave the picture. Ciaran Carson
