| Merzbarn by German émigré artist, Kurt Schwitters. Originally constructed in a barn in the Lake District during 1947-1948, the Merzbarn was Schwitters’ final, and in his own estimation ‘greatest’, piece of work. Measuring 2.5m by 4.5m it is the only surviving example of his Merz constructions, built using found objects and personal debris including the rose of a watering can, twigs and a china egg. The wall was unfinished on Schwitters’ death in 1948 and remained untouched and relatively unknown until Richard Hamilton (a then memmber of the Universities Fine Arts School) sought to rehouse it. Under his direction, the wall was documented in it’s original Elterwater site, before being moved to Newcastle in 1965 and incorporated in the fabric of the Hatton Gallery building. |
