| From April 5 to April 29, 2007, Craig Scott Gallery will mount an exhibition of works by Jean Charles entitled The Bach Variations. The works in the show are produced through a series of dialogues. One such dialogue is between the artist and Bach’s Goldberg Variations. A second dialogue is between the artist and the characters in The
Goldberg Variations, the first novel (written in French and then translated into English) by Nancy Huston whose writings have made her a literary icon in France as well as in her native Canada where she has been awarded the Governor-General’s Award for Fiction and, in 2005, the Order of Canada. Finally, there is the dialogue between two individual artists whose alter ego is “Jean Charles.” Jean Charles is the nom d’artiste for the art collaboration of Jean Miller-Harding, a highly successful realist painter, and her husband Kent Harding, an emerging artist whose own (primarily abstract) work is produced pseudonymously as Charles Kent. The pseudonym “Jean Charles” reflects both a linguistic and gender ambiguity that is especially appropriate to the collaborative paintings of The Bach Variations as well as to their source in Huston’s The Goldberg Variations. Nancy Huston flies in from Paris for the opening on April 5 and for a preview and dinner evening on April 4.
