These fascinating glazes are complicated and intriguing to achieve. It's a unique process in which certain conditions in the firing enable the growth of crystal structures in the glaze. The kiln is fired to 1250 degrees celsius and then cooled very slowly.
Crystalline glazes were discovered during the 19th century and due to their complexity, they were used in a limited way. Only during the last 40 years studio potters began to research and work with these glazes.
