Japingka Gallery is very honoured to be chosen to exhibit important and significant paintings from the Estate of the late, great Mowanjum Artist, Mabel King. Widely regarded as one of the greatest Wandjina Spirit painters, Mabel King was a senior Ngarinyin Elder, highly respected in the cultural affairs of the Mowanjum Community. Mabel was holder of secret women’s powers, and was a custodian and safe-keeper of traditional Ngarinyin songs and dances. Mabel was also responsible for teaching the women and young boys and girls of the Community in the ways of the Wangga ceremony, known as the children's corroboree. This remarkable Exhibition features an extensive and very impressive range of paintings from the Estate of Mabel King and is held in association with the Mowanjum Art Centre of Derby. The official Exhibition opening will be attended by Mabel’s life-long friend and senior Ngarinyin law-woman, Pansy Nulgitt.
In Gallery 2 by way of contrast, we will be featuring finely worked, immaculate paintings from the highly regarded, remote community of Utopia in an Exhibition titled “Sandover River Stories”. This is a singularly... [ Read all ] |

Yinjaa-Barni Artists - Pilbara Paintings – Gallery1 Opens June 15, 2012
Yinjaa –Barni Artists, traditional Aboriginal people of the Fortescue River region, depict the remarkable country of the Pilbara in Western Australia’s north-west. The contrasts of the harsh environment with the hidden gorges of cool water, the seeds and flowers bursting out after rain, are moments that belong to the great Creation stories of the Marrga. This exhibition is
presented in association with Yinjaa-Barni Art Centre.
Closes July 18, 2012
+ Edward Blitner – Barramundi Path – Gallery2 Opens June 15, 2012
Edward Blitner started painting with his grandfather - He says of this time, "My grandfather would be painting on bark and we kids would sit around him and watch him grind the ochres and mix the colours. After a while he would tell us the story for that particular painting and also teach us the songs and dance for that story. When he was in a very good mood, he let us paint the sides of the bark painting. That was my start."
Closes July 18, 2012

Japingka Gallery is kicking off its exciting and extensive 2012 Exhibition Programme with a look to the future along with a nod to the past. With the passing of many of the established, Elders and senior Artists, there has been much justified concern at the loss of so much Cultural knowledge and ancient “Dreaming” Stories. Whilst it is true that so much important information and stories have been irrevocably lost, there has been a concerted effort in recent times to ensure that this valuable knowledge is passed on to the next generations of Indigenous Artists.
These two remarkable and important Exhibitions document this “passing on of the Baton” to the next generations. HEIRS & SUCCESSORS documents this transition and transfer of talent and knowledge from the Elders to the next generations where paintings by famous and established senior Artists from the Central and Western Deserts such as Clifford Possum, the late great Jimmy Baker, Utopia great, Minnie Pwerle, Walangkura Napanangka, George Ward Tjungurrayi and many more hang alongside the exceptional work of the next generation.
For many Australians, their first expo... [ Read all ] |

Australian Contemporary Aboriginal Art
The contribution of Contemporary Aboriginal Art in Australia has been of growing significance since the first desert works emerged in 1971. At that time a young school teacher in the remote community of Papunya in Central Australia, keen to see what unique traditional work the Aboriginal children could produce, indirectly discovered that the elder men held a deep knowledge of traditional lore that they were prepared to apply onto painted boards.
The combination of Tingari Creation stories (1) and secret ceremonial songs and dances, r... [ Read all ] |

Indigenous Art: A Promising View to the Future
In answer to the frequently asked question, “What will happen to Indigenous art with the passing of the great artistic elders?” Japingka Gallery has mounted two exhibitions which show a promising future through direct lines of artistic lineage.
The exhibition in Japingka’s Gallery1, Heirs and Successors, focuses on renowned elders from the central and western deserts along with their successors, while the exhibition in Gallery2, Namitjira Legacy, shows the strong artistic inheritance from the so-called ‘Hermannsburg School’ led by Australia’s famous Western Arrernte (Aranda) artist, Albert Namatjira.
Heirs and Successors follows the lineage through to the next generations of artists who are carrying on the stories of the significant painters from the canon of the Central Desert Indigenous art movement. The names are great. George Ward Tjungurrayi. Minnie Pwerle. Jimmy Baker. Walangkura Napanangka, Naata Nungarrayi, Ningura Napurrula, Ngoia Pollard.
While traditional stories and iconography are carried through onto the canvases of the next generation of painters... [ Read all ] |
