Fantasy/Transformation
Imagination is a necessary tool for all artists. Like a distortion of precognition, fantasy allows us to conceive of and engage in a world beyond the present reality. Transformation is the process of bringing that vision into a communicable form.
Brooklyn Artists Gym will be hosting our quarterly Salon show featuring select Artists-in-Residence and Room 58 Writers. Join us for a discussion of the significance of fantasy and imagination in their work and a special screening of the Art:21 Art in the Twenty-First Century documentary video “Transformation” featuring Paul McCarthy, Cindy Sherman, and Yinka Shonibare MBE.

STAND AT ATTENTION: New Work by Réamonn Byrne

PRESS RELEASE FROM REAMONN BYRNE:
Stand at Attention is a new collection of work by Irish artist Réamonn Byrne. Formations of linear drawings in ink, pencil and paint on paper resemble groups of documents or blueprints in that they present distilled information, reduced to line and accents of paint. Each batch forms a cohesive visual whole, yet the eye lays focused on a single piece at a time, exploring the individual's minute responses as attention flutters amongst the frames. These simple structures pose questions about how narrative is constructed and how we process visual information.
In this body of work the artist takes this format and turns it on himself. Members of the Irish Brigade of the American Civil War are depicted throughout the work, surely heroes in that pivotal time for their new nation. It is in this posse that the artist places himself introspectively against his peoples historic endeavors. We are located in a 10,000 sq. ft. newly renovated space on the third floor of 168 7th Street (just below 3rd Ave.) on the Park Slope side of Gowanus, Brooklyn. The neighborhood supports many working artists, art related enterprises and interesting small businesses.

By subway:
Take the F train to the 4th Avenue stop, or the R train to the 9th Street stop (this is the same stop). Exit toward 4th Ave. and 9th St. Walk down 9th St. to 9th St. and 3rd Ave. Turn right. Walk 2 short blocks to 7th St. Turn left. Walk 100 yards to 168 7th St., which will be on the left. Pull hard on the door, and come on up!
By bus:
The #71 stops at 3rd Ave. and 3rd St, 4 blocks from BAG.
The #75 and #77 stop at 3rd Ave. and 9th St., 1 1/2 blocks from BAG.
The #37 goes along 3rd Ave. and stops near 7th St., 1/2 block from BAG.
The #103 goes along 4th Ave., and stops 1 1/2 blocks from BAG.

From Park Slope:
Walk down 7th St. until you pass 3rd Ave. We are on the left at 168 7th St.
