The Gallery's collection of oil paintings include Turner's Calais Sands, Landseer's The Random Shot, Constable's Hampstead Heath and Clausen's Spring Morning: Haverstock Hill.
Since the Gallery's opening successive curators have added to Wrigley's legacy.
Today, the collection also includes 20th century paintings by artists such as Pasmore and Burra, and a growing selection of contemporary artists such as Rachel Goodyear and Maurizio Nannucci.

19 December- 7 August
This exhibition explores society’s 21st century obsession with the use of CCTV, mobile phone tracking and government databases all of which hold personal information about us. It looks at the 19th century artistic ideas of the artist and his model, at the artist as voyeur, at we the watchers and the watched. It features a titillation booth- ‘What the Butler Saw’ - popular at the time on seaside promenades, and objects from the museum’s permanent collection that convey the intrigues of a person’s private and intimate personal life. Society’s fascination with celebrity culture, the Big Brother TV Programme, on-line diaries etc will also feature. This exhibition asks who’s watching you? |

Bloom 1 May – 17 July
Like many town centres, hubs of shopping, tourism and work going on, Bury goes through the annual ritual of Britain in Bloom. Each spring and summer municipal Parks Departments bedeck public spaces with blooming displays. Working with assumptions of floralornament rooted firmly in bygone times, in myths of order applied to nature, these displays fix public aesthetics into values that are increasingly open to question in the context of climate change. Bloom the latest exhibition in Bury Art Gallery will show how nature has been manipulated. Featuring works from oil on panel to neon, from video to bonsai, artists will investigate what it meansto apply order over nature.
New German Romanticism

The starting point for German artist Werner Fohrer’s paintings is the visible reality of the natural world. Not At This Address
1 August – 7 November
Building on its practice of bringing the best international art to Bury, the Gallery presented Not At This Address. This exhibition looked at the growing number of artists in the region who share the same drive to transcend the local and, with some success, engage with the global cultural dialogue. Using a wide range of media from watercolours to computer animation, the exhibition threaded a path through questions of memory, hope, action and what is real.
The artists featured were Jesse Ash, Brass Art, Maurice Carlin, Alison Erika Forde, Pat Flynn, Rachel Goodyear, Andrew McDonald, Amy Pennington, Magnus Quaife, Rachel Well, Sarah Sanders and Anne Charnock.

If artwork is wanted for a particular exhibition then the art gallery will advertise in advance for artists to submit their work.

You'll find Bury Art Gallery, Museum and Archives in the centre of Bury, just across Kay Gardens from the Mill Gate shopping centre and 50 yards from the Bus/Tram Interchange.
Metrolink trams run every 6 minutes from Manchester city centre to Bury Interchange (journey time 25 minutes). There are Metrolink services from Piccadilly station, Altrincham and Eccles into the centre of Manchester.
There are also frequent bus services connecting Bury Interchange to the local area.
There is on-street 'pay and display' parking around Bury Art Gallery, Museum and Archives building (maximum stay 2 hours). Alternatively, follow signs for one of Bury's longer stay 'pay and display' car parks nearby.
