| Centre De La Gravure
Le Centre de la Gravure et de l'Image imprimée (Centre for Engravings and Prints) in La Louvière, Belgium, is housed in a contemporary building with 12,900 sq ft of exhibition space spread over three levels. There is no other museum of engravings and printed art quite like it.
The present structure of the building which is both spacious and bright, still retains signs of its original function. Ceramic tiles and a sloping floor in the cellars recall the existence of a swimming pool in the 1930's. However the building situated at 10 rue des Amours was renovated in 1988 to its present appearance by the architect Hubert Pourtois and the interior designer Jean Glibert.
The museum functions both as a meeting point, and as a place for creativity and research. It is financed by the Communauté française de Belgique. Its primary objective is to promote contemporary graphic art, thanks mainly to its exceptional collection of 5,500 prints, 5,000 posters and 500 artists’ books and portfolios.

The collection consists of more than 6.000 engravings of contemporary artists, Belgian and international. It also consists of a “valuable reserve” of some 150 portfolios and 400 first proofs (separate and limited editions having some kind of genuine character and mostly signed by the artist) and of more than 2.000 artists' books and compilations.
The collection comes from a variety of sources. There are works purchased by the Ministry of Culture, by the city council of La Louvière, and by the Centre de la Gravure itself; there are also major donations or bequests from artists and patrons.
It is essentially a contemporary collection: most of the pieces are recent, dating from 1970 onwards. A few older works bring a historical perspective to this highly contemporary ensemble.
Up to now, rather than having just one section of its graphic archive permanently on display, the Centre de la Gravure has chosen instead to regularly exhibit works chosen from the collection in accordance with the various thematic or technical exhibitions.

MAY ’68
The power of imagination !
from 26 April to 17 August 2008
May 1968 sees the outbreak of a widespread movement of social and student unrest. A million demonstrators proclaim their opposition to the Gaullist government. Their daily confrontations paralyse the French capital.
So begins the production of posters of all shapes and sizes, at first a few, then many more. Signs of the revolt are everywhere. Nearly 800 posters and pamphlets are printed at the various “ateliers populaires” of the Schools of Fine-Arts. Their simplistic but straightforward graphics are the expression of the turbulent political ideas held by the students and strikers.
The exhibition « May ‘68 » presents around a hundred posters from the private collections of Eric Kawan and others. A complete catalogue of the works on show is edited by Le Centre de la Gravure, in collaboration with The AD Store.
Several parallel activities will be held.

Cries and Whispers
(Cris et chuchotements)
From 20 September 2008 to 4 January 2009
23 women artists exhibit a wide range of disciplines.
Cries & Whispers marks the 20th anniversary of Le Centre de la Gravure and explores the themes of feminine identity, intimacy and fantasy. A large number of the exhibits are produced especially for the occasion. The title of the exhibition comes from the film “Viskningar och Rop” by Ingmar Bergman. It symbolises the three main thematic axes: revelation and restraint, anger and tenderness, screams and murmurs.
Wishing to interact fully with the subject, the entire female team working at the museum has participated in writing the presentations for each artist. Thus all the people involved in this exhibition : writers, graphic and lay-out designers, curator and artists are women.
