Etherton Gallery is pleased to announce our first exhibition of the 2007-2008 season, Frances Murray: Psychologue, Photographs 1977-2007, a retrospective exhibition celebrating Tucson photographer Frances Murray’s 30-year career and 60th birthday. Murray’s career will also be the subject of a catalog by the same name, and she will hold a book signing on September 8th during the opening reception.
During Murray’s lengthy career she has produced a diverse body of work including nudes, self-portraits and still-lifes as well as images of her twin daughters. Having no formal training, Murray’s work nevertheless reflects a restless search to understand the nature of photography through her intuition and keen powers of observation. Murray has been inspired by the work of André Kertész, Harry Callahan, Emmet Gowin, and Paul Outerbridge, but considers mentor and husband Harold Jones the most significant influence on her work.
Murray’s work suggests the influence of female Surrealists as she incorporates dreams and a contemporary interpretation of automatic writing into her imagery. She asserts her position as a creative su... [ Read all ] |
