Meng Jin Every Room Is Illuminated

Kiang Gallery is pleased to present Beijing based artist Meng Jin, who photographs chandeliers in meeting rooms in the People’s Parliament House in Beijing, and other power boardrooms with similar institutional context. These rooms are charged with energy and Meng Jin captures not the brilliance of these chandeliers, but the afterimage, an optical illusion that refers to an image continuing to appear in our vision after the exposure to the original image has ceased, the bright glow that seems to float before ones eyes after staring at brilliant light. By using at least two layered negatives for each image, one in focus and one out of focus and digitally manipulating information these prints on rice paper, achieve a very silky image revealing subtle hints of color associated with the inverted afterimage and showing a reality changed by computer, where only the lights and the reflection caused by lights remain visible in the photographs. The new space was designed by architect Amy Landesberg.
