M97 Gallery

As one of the first galleries in Shanghai dedicated to exhibiting contemporary and fine art photography, m97's goal is to exhibit the most interesting and innovative photography work in China, across all genres of the medium.

m97 Gallery is located on the second floor of No. 97 Moganshan Road in Shanghai near the Suzhou Creek, which is home to dozens of art galleries and artist studios. m97 is a 300-square-meter gallery space with a 200-square-meter main exhibition room, and three smaller viewing rooms where visitors can see additional works of the artists we represent.

HUANG XIAOLIANG was born in Xiangxi, Hunan province in 1985. He is a 2009 graduate from Qingdao University, where he studied Digital Media. In 2010, Huang was awarded the prestigious Tierney Fellowship as well as the Three Shadows Photography Award, and the Fang Jun Art Award by the Beijing Today Art Museum. In 2011 Huang Xiaoliang was nominated for the Foam Paul Huf Award.

LU YANPENG was born in 1984 in Fujian Province. He graduated from the Art Institute of Fujian University in 2005 and since then he has participated in numerous exhibitions both in China and internationally. For his “Simple Song” project, Luo Dan employed the traditional collodion wet plate photographic process invented in 1850, spending several months traveling with a portable darkroom in remote and mountainous regions of China’s southern Yunnan Province. Looking to capture the purity of this photographic process, Luo Dan was able to reflect the authenticity found in rural life for many of China’s yet undeveloped regions, where the way of life has remained largely intact for hundreds of years. Many of the villages in this region were settled by Christian missionaries 100 years ago, where the local villagers are people of faith and devout churchgoers dressing up in their ethnic garments, or Sunday’s best. By bringing a reverence to both this photographic process and subject matter, Luo Dan’s “Simple Song” series is an effort to capture a sense of timelessness.
