Nicola Kelly / Rebecca Spooner
21 February - 12 March
The second exhibition in the season develops the idea of a nostalgia for the natural. Rebecca Spooner’s installations incorporate the filmed and photographed from various points in history and with a sympathy for a particularly British sense of the natural landscape, its wildlife and histories, and their place in our affections. There is a melancholic longing often associated with old photographs or damaged cine-film, and it animates her installations to surprising effect. Alongside are works by Nicola Kelly, for whom the ‘found’ photograph is often a starting point in a process resulting in pieces imbued with the emotive. |

El Anatsui
22 November 03 - 7 January 04
From Ghana but living in Nigeria since 1975, El Anatsui is one of Africa’s most powerful contemporary artists. His work dwells on the continent’s history, drawing simultaneously on traditional African idioms and contemporary western art. Having worked over the years in paint, wood, clay and metal, his recent works use large quantities of discarded everyday objects to comment on contemporary west African culture, history and society.
