The Horse Hospital

The Horse Hospital was established by Roger K. Burton in 1992 as a not for profit arts organisation providing an umbrella for the related media of art, film, fashion and music.

The Chamber of Pop Culture is an independent, non-profit organisation promoting a living and hitherto rarely documented, and even more rarely seen, cutting edge strand of modern art; giving artists the context and support they are denied elsewhere. With over 50 exhibitions in the past 10 years, the artists, musicians and filmmakers who have shown and been shown in The Chamber of Pop Culture share no common aesthetic bond, other than a desire to work and exhibit outside of the practise and theory prevalent in contemporary art dialogue.

The Horse Hospital is a Grade Two listed, two-floor, purpose-built stable for 24
horses. Built originally in 1797 by James Burton, the building was redeveloped
sometime after 1860, and retains many of its original features, such as concrete
moulded ramps, mock cobbled floor and iron tethering rings. The Horse Hospital
is a rare example of a historically charged buildi... [ Read all ]

Forthcoming Exhibitions

Sacred Pastures
Exhibition: 7th June - 28th June
Mon-Sat 12-6pm

Private view: Friday 6th June 7:30pm

The Horse Hospital presents Sacred Pastures, a three person exhibition that for the first time brings together contemporary religious/apocalyptic painter Norbert Kox, multi-passioned visionary artist Cathy Ward and transpersonal self-taught painter Eric Wright.

Sacred Pastures highlights each artists' dedication to revelatory and pietistic concepts within their work. While producing a highly distinctive range of imagery drawn from diverse sources of inspiration, the artists share a canon of practice that emphasizes the work as a means by which inner discoveries can be made manifest. Each has staked out a territory within the realm created by the intersection of intuition and the objective world. The exhibition highlights the diverse manner in which a bold romantic spirit is returning to contemporary artistic practice. Here are artists that eschew irony in favour of conviction and do not shrink from self-portrayal. Together presenting the antithesis to nihilistic self-referenced output while avoiding sentimentality.

In a walk on the wild side that spans over thirty years, and has taken in periods spent in New York, Moscow and Berlin, German photographer Miron Zownir has recorded countless arresting images of human desolation and decline. Drawn to the margins and extremes of society, he sought out the damned and the dispossessed in the shadows of the city - the whores, bums, junkies and transsexuals. The freaks and outcasts who had no place to go.
'I am drawn to people who are 'lost', in an existential or metaphysical way,' he explains. 'If you are lost, you move in your own world, blocking out the outside, but looking for something to connect with. I have an empathy for these kind of people, for their emotional condition and the vulnerability they reveal in that state.'
Zownir also moves in his own world, one as acutely-focused and... [ Read all ]
