UNION

UNION was founded in September 2003 by Jari Lager, director. Since then the gallery has been committed to presenting the works of young emerging artists.

The gallery's broad program of exhibitions and artists has brought interesting and regionally diverse young practitioners to the UK, many for the first time.
Exhibitions gaining critical success in the UK and internationally have helped artists to develop and assert themselves strongly on an international level.

UNION maintains an intensive relationship with artists represented exclusively by the gallery and is particularly active in the promotion of their work.

The gallery has recently moved to new offices in the vibrant East End, where it operate from its latest space on Teesdale Street in Bethnal Green, as well as running a dynamic programme of external exhibitions and events.

IN ANOTHER LAND–ANTI
TEXT BY SASKIA DRAXLER

“Hans-Jörg Mayer and I had a psychedelic band together a while ago. We called ourselves „Die SchlĂŒssel“
How did the name came up? ... Well, there were The Doors, so we thought “The Keys” would be a real good choice.” Gabi Dziuba.

Hans-Jörg Mayer grew up with TV shows like The Avengers and the first art book that he came across in the 60s was Lucy Lippard’s “POP ART”. In the times of young neo expressionism of the 80s, Mayer consequently followed a more conceptual, emblematic direction represented by his first language paintings.

Even if some of his new paintings shown at the Union Gallery on one level seem to clearly be inspired by Lars von Triers, movie Antichrist, this seems to be more about the ANTI, as Mayer’s personal working interest, than about the particular splatter aesthetics of the movie. Again he also turns to language paintings. GAGA as compared to the older language works, gained a layer of trash, spray paint, random graffiti.

It therefore might sound like an unforeseen, but wo... [ Read all ]

Press Releases

Tonight Forget About Your Houses and Cars deconstructs the allure of the apocalyptic. From bombs and explosions to cults and catastrophes, the exhibition explores the place of disaster in the collective imagination. Employing devices ranging from comic illustration to doomsday prophecy and postmodern meta-narrative, the artists in the exhibition consider both the historical and contemporary place of disaster, and the mysteries of its enduring appeal.

Matt O’Dell and Ahmed Alsoudani stage the visceral drama of disaster and destruction in works that reference acutely contemporary conflicts, ranging from the war in Iraq to the terrorist attacks of September 11th. Creating dramatic images and hermetically crafted aesthetics, these works viscerally present the apocalypse that daily takes place around us. Meanwhile, Christoph Draeger’s puzzle piece begins with a single image - a bomb explosion - and illustrates the manner in which this image is painstakingly reconstituted in our imagination.

Justin Lieberman, Neil Hamon and Guy Richards Smit explore the role of pop culture and news media in propagating ideas of the impending... [ Read all ]
