The abstract paintings of Pam Karp are full of brilliant colors and intricately layered texture that betray her deep connection to the world around her. Born in South Africa and now living in Australia, Karp’s paintings are compositions inspired by a passion for life, and coloured by the diverse influences of Australia and her country of birth. This connection is evidenced by the brilliant hues and intricate textures that emerge in each piece, texture frequently being the subject itself. Mood is at the heart of Pam’s paintings which are visual journeys of her thoughts and experiences, metaphors of her relationship to her remarkable surroundings.
By working with many layers of paint and frequently using a loose grid like arrangement Karp is able to weave a colorful pattern that strikes the viewer with its unguarded energy. Yet, many of her paintings are studies of a single hue. In these, Karp explores the emotional charge that one color such as an icy blue or a velvety red is able to release.
