Gallery/Dealer Details - Open Walls Gallery
Founded in 2009 by Elodie Bellanger & Guillaume Trotin, West Berlin Gallery specializes in street art & illustration. The gallery takes its name from its location, being located at the former border between Eastern and Western Berlin. The birth of street art in Berlin also occurred in Western Berlin in the late 1970s, which was another inspiration behind the gallery’s name.
The gallery comprises a main exhibition room where monthly shows are hosted, as well as a showroom where our gallery’s most representative artworks are displayed.
We have chosen to showcase mostly Berlin-based artists in the town that has inspired their work. We represent several street art artists including Alias, Prost, SP38 and Linda’s Ex who have started doing arts off the beaten track. On the street, that is. We have developed a relationship based on trust and mutual respect towards those unconventional artists. This has allowed us to provide not only regular exhibitions of their works, but also interviews and other interactions between the artists and the public.
Having been one of the very first Italian street art artists, Giacomo Spazio then turned to pop art, using literature and music from the 70s and the 80s as an inspiration. His works look like they are from another planet and lead to the exact kind of reaction we think art should convey.
We only showcase original artworks which are not only created on canvas but also on wood, iron and any other support. The artists we support have showed their talent on the walls of many cities. For us, this credibility is the reason their works should be displayed in art galleries.
The other focus of the gallery is illustration, represented by artists such as Hara Katsiki, recently awarded with the Illustrative’s Young Illustrator Award 2010, French artist Niark1 and Chow Martin. Those artists manage to express their strong personalities through their outstanding works, and have become great assets to our gallery.
The artists currently represented include Alias, Roland Brückner (Linda’s Ex), Prost, Giacomo Spazio, SP38, Alexander Clouchard Barbone, Niark1, Doppeldenk and Chow Martin to name a few.
