Wandering the neighbourhoods of Buenos Aires in 2006, which some call the Paris of South America; we were amidst grand buildings, lush parks and plazas overflowing with Portenos at sidewalk cafes. Oddly, our mirth always seemed to divert, not to these symbols but rather to the pervasive urban art of the city: stencils. Our camera began to fill not with the elegance of Buenos Aires but rather with the passion of the stencil.
Stenciling seems to be synonymous with Buenos Aires. This explosion of graffiti art began in early 2000. Politics and the economy were in upheaval. Yet this expression of art operated from a very democratic platform. Anyone can do it. We may usually associate art with a moneyed class. This is not the case with stencils.
Upon our return to Buenos Aires in 2007, we knew that we had to seek out Post Bar located in the neighbourhood of Palermo Soho. Its walls are lined with over 1600 stencils. The proprietor of Post Bar, Pablo, welcomed us with open arms and provided a personalized tour of the gallery space upstairs. Hollywood in Cambodia is the gallery that is dedicated to displaying the rich street art of the stencil masters of Buenos Aires.
