TOWER BLOCKS & TUNNELS
Jörg Obergfell
In the first UK solo exhibition by Jörg Obergfell ‘Tower Blocks and Tunnels,’’ the artist uses his unique physical and live sculptural works to reflect upon contemporary big city structures.
Jörg Obergfell carefully selects his sculptural materials from the multitude of manmade debris that circulates in the metropolis such as print media, flyers, magazines, cardboard boxes, fruit crates and plastic bottles. These materials are broken into fragments and reassembled to create model like sculptures including tower blocks and skyscrapers as well as smaller city markers such as litterbins and public sculpture.
In his detailed sculptures Obergfell uses the technique of model making, creating work on a small-scale, or combining absurd elements to symbolize utopia and dystopia in city architecture. For example Obergfell sculpts a city in a bottle or a mega structure on a treetop, combining two elements to create what could be termed a ‘city-sublime.’
ETIQUETTE OF COMFORT
LISA SLOMINSKI & SALLY SPINKS
BEARSPACE brings together Slominski and Spinks to investigate philosophies of security relating to comfort and discomfort through imagery.
Using mechanical processes, both artists look at recognised visuals and insert these into a new context, from a threat into a symbol of reassurance or visa versa. Appearance and texture are important in this transformation. Both artists use appealing media such as perfectly produced plastics, fine wool, luxury wallpaper print and other seductive materials to alter the original significance of both source visuals and medium.
Lisa Slominski uses mass-produced symbols of comfort, ranging from puppies to mobile phones. Slominski repeats these images altering the viewers state-of-mind from safe to confused and sometimes repelled. Sally Spinks’ practice is predominantly textile based. The artist has a strong relationship to traditional techniques of textile production, using the labour intense process to create highly finished wall-hangings and sculptural works that speak subverted messages into the home environment.
Both artists recently completed their MFA at Goldsmiths, University of London.
ULITMATE LOVE STORY
Isabel Rock
Ultimate Love Story is the exciting first solo exhibition by artist Isabel Rock. Her practice creates a parallel world to our own reality - where animals can talk, midgets have four eyes, and birds have dogs' heads. Rebellious, Rock feels reality is too boring, she therefore draws on the teetering stories of infamous children's tales, romance novels and sensational magazines like 'Pick Me Up'
