Artists Represented - Rupert Copping Gallery
Rupert Copping was born in London but grew up in South America. For fifteen
years he lived in a remote area of Spain. He now lives mostly on the Isle Of
Skye. When not on Skye he divides his time between Portugal and Mexico. He
trained in Denmark as a candle-maker.
For five years he ran his own candle workshop on Skye. Colour and form
being an integral part of candle making, painting came to Rupert as a natural
devlopment from this craft.
Most of his paintings have been based on the landscape of Skye and West
Scotland. He paints mainly in oils, on deeply textured backgrounds made of
composite materials laid down on board, canvas, or paper. Some of these
paintings veer towards the abstract, others towards the representational or
figurative (please see his back catalogue for examples of the latter).
As a painter, Rupert reacts organically to his subject and the materials he works
with. His approach is instinctive and emotive. He is more interested on whether
a painting is true to itself than in the style by which it is achieved.
At present he is exploring different ways to reconnect to a figurative style of
painting, so no new works in this style are currently available.
