GIFTS

In January 1999, The Saatchi Gallery donated 100 works from the collection to The Arts Council Collection of Great Britain, which was launched in 1946 and operates as a "lending library" to museums and galleries around Britain. The Arts Council Collection is administered by The Hayward Gallery and the gift is part of The Saatchi Gallery's aim of increasing awareness and promoting interest in younger artists.

The gift included a diverse range of work in a variety of media by many of the artists who have played an essential part in the "Young British Artists" phenomenon. Included in the gift were works by Richard Billingham, Glenn Brown, Simon Callery, Keith Coventry, Peter Davies, Langlands and Bell, Mark Francis, John Frankland, James Rielly and Richard Wilson. Many museums throughout the UK have since mounted exhibitions from the Arts Council gift.

In September 2000, The Saatchi Gallery donated 40 more works by young British artists. The gift to the National Art Collections Fund, included paintings, sculpture, and installations by 22 artists: Simon English, Paul Finnegan, Mark Cannon, Nicholas May, Jordan Baseman, Katharine Dowson, John Greenwood, Marcus Taylor and Richard Woods. These works have been distributed through the National Arts Collection Fund to eight major museum collections across Britain. The Art Fund was chosen because of its distinguished 97 year record of presenting gifts and assisting museums throughout the UK with acquisitions.

In January 2002, The Saatchi Gallery donated 50 artworks to Paintings in Hospitals. Paintings in Hospitals, a registered charity, was founded in 1959 and provides a lending library of over 3,000 original works of art to NHS hospitals, hospices and health centres throughout England, Wales and Ireland. There are currently 175 hospitals participating in the loan scheme. The Patron of Paintings in Hospitals is HRH, The Prince of Wales, who recently announced a joint initiative between his foundation and NHS Estates on improving design for new hospitals.

The paintings and wall sculptures represent a broad spectrum of young British art over the last decade and include works by Simon Callery, Daniel Coombs, David Leapman, Brad Lochore, Nicholas May and Richard Woods that have been selected as appropriate for a hospital environment. Whether conceptual, figurative or abstracted, the works are imaginative, humorous at times and thought-provoking, and will hopefully complement the enjoyment of contemporary art which is already visible in some of our hospitals.

In January 2003, in keeping with The Saatchi Gallery's policy of making gifts from the collection, The Saatchi Gallery donated a further 34 sculptures to the Arts Council Collection, run by The Hayward Gallery. The gift features works by artists who have played a vital part in the "'Young British Artists" phenomenon.

Among the list of 18 artists are Jordan Baseman, Steven Gontarski, Paul Finnegan, John Frankland, Alex Hartley, Siobhan Hapaska, Marc Quinn, Richard Wilson and Gary Webb.

This new gift of sculpture is timely because it will be stored and displayed, with the rest of the sculpture in the Collection, in the new sculpture facility at Longside in Yorkshire Sculpture Park near Wakefield, which opened in Spring 2003.
