Sarah Shirtcliffe
 | I am a visual artist, born on 4th of May 1978 in Chesterfield, Derbyshire. I am fascinated in amusing scenarios and bizzarre situations, which i then recreate it on paper. I use information that I visually observe to inform my drawings of the humour in everyday life. I have always had a keen interest in contemporary art and have been attracted to pieces that subtlety comment on mundane situations or behaviour that we generally over look. Going that step further and making my work more three dimensional illustrates my curiosity about depth and the layers we tear off, to reach the core of situations and emotions. Although my work speaks for itself, it embodies elements of storytelling, which the audience can then develop visually for themselves through their own interpretation.
Not everything is black and white or straight forward.

About the Artist
My love for illustrating began when I was a child, drawing totally freehand I would copy characters from comics, colour them in and send them off to competitions. My first taste of success was when I won first prize for painting a picture of Bolsover Castle, Derbyshire, UK. My photograph appeared in the Derbyshire Times, a local newspaper.
Coming from the north of England has given me a quirky sense of humour which is reflected in my art, and human emotion fascinates me. I find myself observing peoples behaviour and re-creating it on paper in cartoon form. My illustrations exaggerate facial expressions to create a story where words become redundant. There is nothing I love better than breathing life into inanimate objects giving them personalities and character.
As a student at the Cyprus College of Art I experimented with illustration, sculpture, photography and painting. This unique opportunity gave me the time and space to experience a variety of medias, which allowed my work to evolve organically in many different areas. This was a great opportunity for me to develop the skills I already possessed.
I am inspired by observing people’s facial expression as every emotion is visible, from joy and laughter to pain and sadness. Although my work appears to be composed simply, I challenge the viewer to look deeper to find the underlying humour. I enjoy creating neat, clear defined lines, separating the foreground from the background to create a 3D effect. Illustration is and always has been my passion.
